How to calibrate brightness and color for indoor vs outdoor LED
Set nits for the room, match color temperature to cameras and house light, and avoid the “nuclear white” look that wrecks IMAG.
An LED wall at factory brightness is often far too hot for a sanctuary and not hot enough for noon sun. Color that looks fine in the shop can go magenta on camera or green against tungsten practicals. Calibration is the process of setting a brightness and white point the room and the cameras can live with — and keeping cabinets consistent with each other.
This is not a sales “color science” lecture. It is a field sequence you can run with the processor, a meter if you have one, and a camera if you do not.
Indoor and outdoor are different jobs
Indoor (churches, theaters, ballrooms). You are usually fighting too much light, not too little. Typical operating points are roughly 200–800 nits for scenic and lyrics, sometimes up to ~1000–1500 nits for bright IMAG in a lit room. Factory 800–1500 nit indoor cabinets run at a fraction of that. Running them at 100% in a dark sanctuary makes faces look dim, cameras iris down, and the congregation squint.
Outdoor (daytime). You need output and contrast more than subtlety. 4000–8000+ nits is common for full sun. At night, that same wall must come down hard or it will flatten every camera and annoy the neighborhood. Build a day preset and a night preset.
Indoor with windows. Treat it as a hybrid. Morning services may need a brighter preset than evening rehearsals. Do not calibrate only at Friday night darkness.
Write the target as “percent of cabinet max” and as a nit target if you have a meter. Percents are not portable across products.
Set a white point that matches the show
Most houses should start at D65 / about 6500 K if IMAG and lyric content are built for Rec. 709. That matches typical cameras and computer graphics.
Exceptions:
- A tungsten-heavy theatrical look may want a warmer wall (5600 K or lower) so the LED does not look like a xenon cut.
- A daylight outdoor wall next to sky may need a slightly cooler point so it does not go cream on camera.
- Mixed LED fixtures in the same sightline should be close. A 6500 K wall next to 4500 K battens looks like two different shows.
If you have a colorimeter or spectroradiometer, take a reading of a full-white test pattern at operating brightness from a representative seat (not 20 cm off the wall unless you are doing cabinet uniformity). If you do not have a meter, use a calibrated camera in Rec. 709, white-balance the camera on a proper chart in the room, then adjust the wall until white is neutral in the monitor — not in your memory.
Do not white-balance the camera to the LED wall and then declare the wall “correct.” You just hid the error in the camera.
Brightness: measure, then look
- Set the processor and receiving-card brightness to a known starting point (indoor: 20–40% is a common first guess; outdoor day: much higher).
- Put up a 100% white field, then a 50% gray, then real content.
- Stand in the closest seat. If you see the pixel grid and you already chose an appropriate pitch, you may be too bright (or the content is a fine 1-pixel pattern).
- Look at faces in front of the wall. If speakers become silhouettes, the wall is too hot relative to front light. Raise key light or lower the wall — usually lower the wall; the lighting designer already has a plot.
- Check IMAG. Cameras should not have to sit at a closed iris just to hold the wall.
For lyrics, slightly lower than “impressive demo” is almost always better. Readable and dimmer beats glowing and unreadable.
Lock a maximum brightness in the processor so a guest file cannot slam the wall to 100%.
Color uniformity across cabinets
New walls can still show a patchwork: one column cooler, a replacement cabinet brighter, a module with a green shift.
Field options, from cheap to proper:
- Module / cabinet calibration files from the factory. Load them. This is the baseline.
- Receiving-card brightness and color coefficients in the control software. Use them to pull outliers toward the median, not to invent a new look on one column.
- Camera-based or meter-based calibration systems when the wall is a permanent house product and the budget exists.
- Physical replacement of a cabinet that will not match. Chasing a 15% brightness error with coefficients forever is how walls get weird.
After any module swap, the new module will often look like a postage stamp until it is calibrated or aged. Keep spare modules from the same batch when you can.
Black level, gamma, and low-brightness behavior
Indoor walls at low brightness can shift color or show more noise. After you set the show level:
- Check a near-black video. If the wall glows gray, lift is too high or the cabinet’s low-brightness calibration is poor.
- Check gradients. Banding means you need better bit depth, dither, or less aggressive processing.
- Check skin tones on IMAG windows. LED walls can pull cyan or magenta at low PWM.
Some products have a “low grayscale” or “low brightness” calibration. Run it if the manual says to. Skipping it is why 15% looks green and 40% looks fine.
Cameras, scan, and flicker during calibration
You cannot finish LED color without a camera if the wall will be on IMAG.
- Set shutter and refresh to a combination that does not beat. 1/60 on a 60 Hz wall is a common starting argument; the troubleshooting tutorial covers flicker in depth.
- Calibrate with the same camera LUT and color space you will use on Sunday.
- Watch for moiré on fine-pitch plus long lenses. Sometimes the fix is focus, distance, or a slight defocus on the wall — not a new white point.
If the wall looks perfect to the eye and sick on camera, believe the camera for the IMAG product, then find a compromise the room can accept.
Presets you should actually save
Save and label:

Export them off the processor. Recalling “last week” is not a color pipeline.
Common mistakes
Demo mode forever. Sales brightness is not show brightness.
Calibrating at 2 a.m. in a dark room for a 10 a.m. sunlit lobby.
Matching the wall to a phone photo. Phones lie about white.
Different brightness per surface without telling the content team. Side scenic at 60% and center IMAG at 25% can be correct — if it is documented.
Outdoor night at day nits. Neighbors, drivers, and cameras will all complain; the cameras will win first.
Copying coefficients between different module batches as if they were the same product.
A 30-minute house calibration
- Load factory cabinet calibration.
- Recall or set D65 / 709.
- Set brightness to a conservative indoor or appropriate outdoor starting point.
- White field, gray field, real lyrics, real IMAG.
- Adjust white point from camera + eye.
- Pull obvious cabinet outliers.
- Save presets and export.
- Walk the closest row and the balcony.
When indoor walls disappear into the room and outdoor walls still punch through sun, you are done — not when the spec sheet says 100%.
